TVM Coffee House Omelette

1.9K

Trivandrum is dotted by branches of the iconic Indian Coffee House. I had been fed with generous doses of lip-smacking stories of its masala dosa and varied cutlets and omelettes which I have missed in all my previous visits. This time I managed to make two visits. Today I stepped inside the one located in Thampanoor near the central railway station. The building is a circular red with geometric windows. The entrance is M shaped. The architecture reminded me of the sets of Ray’s Hirak Rajar Deshe or the Kingdom of Diamonds, especially the chambers of “mogoj dholai “ or “brain wash” in Utpal Dutt’s castle with geometric designs and circular structures. And the inside was even more interesting. It had a winding pathway with a ramp lined by seating areas of three seater benches and a table. The menu card was displayed on the walls. The only disappointment was the absence of mutton items. So I made peace with the chicken omelette which was yummy. Today, in the time of bistros and Baristas and Cafe Coffee Days where you can choose from a wide array of beverages, sandwiches, wraps and what not, in an air-conditioned zone with contemporary music and English speaking young women and men to take your orders, the Indian Coffee House stands as an anachronism with waiters in white uniform and maharaja style head gear, eager to finish one order and move on to the next. But I would still come back to this place, walk through the ramp and eat a chicken omelette with mint lime soda. It’s an experience. And I don’t mind revisiting this experience one more time. In my next visit, perhaps 🙂

    Hi Anu,
I have a lot of memories connecting Indian Coffee House, when I walk into the one at Statue a feeling of nostalgia overwhelms me. Apart from the fact that the food there is yummy, It is one of the few successful ventures run by a series of worker co-operative societies.
