One of the highlights of the Iftaar walk was Tawakkal sweets. Malpuas, suterfenis, different types of halwa and phirni lured us into the shop. But what stole the show was the malai puff. It’s like a balushahi from the exterior, sticky with sugar syrup, garnished with generous amounts of pista and badaam; but inside rests a rabdi type of thick gooey cream or malai. The crunchy sweet shell merges with the creamy, not-so-sweet malai within and together, it makes you go aa-haa!!! And the taste lingers in your mouth long after you’ve eaten it. The malai puff is no ordinary mithai; rather, it’s a feeling, an emotion which you start to miss and long for. And I don’t mind travelling again, all the way to this 60 year old Tawakkal sweets to savour that feeling again. Malai puff…
